Romeu: Plenty for Saints to build on

Despite suffering 4-2 defeat against Premier League leaders Chelsea on Tuesday night, midfielder Oriol Romeu believes there is plenty for Southampton to build on.

The Saints were outgunned at Stamford Bridge after Romeu, against his former club, had cancelled out Eden Hazard’s early opener, as Chelsea displayed their title-winning credentials.

The match was long over as a contest by the time Ryan Bertrand also struck on his old stomping ground for a late consolation, but a second goal was the least Southampton deserved for their efforts.

Next up for them is a home match against Hull City, as they look to ensure they finish in the top half of the table for the fourth season running.

Romeu said: “There are things we did against Chelsea that we need to do again on the weekend.

“We were brave with the ball and we played a good match – that’s what we need to focus on and make sure we do again.

“We need to get those three points because they will be very important. We need to start winning games and thinking of getting as high in the table as possible.”

Romeu was also happy to be back after scoring on what was his return from a two-match suspension.

“I always want to play and I always want to help the team and give the best account of myself,” he added. “So it was enjoyable to be back out there again but sadly we couldn’t win.”
