Gibson: Middlesbrough relegation is lowest point

Middlesbrough skipper Ben Gibson believes his side must take ownership of their poor record this season after a 3-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge confirmed their relegation on Monday.

Home-grown talent Gibson – who was born in Middlesbrough – reflected on a tough season for Boro who managed just one league victory since beating Swansea in mid-December.

And the defender has urged his side to get back to the top flight quicker than last time, after a seven-year wait to earn promotion.

“It’s definitely the lowest point in my career, possibly the lowest point in my life,” said Gibson.

“The Premier League is the best league in the world to play football – you play against the best players, the best clubs and it’s the most-watched by fans.

“We’ve wasted an opportunity. Seven hard years it took us to get here, and we’ve gone down with a whimper.

“Our season and us being relegated isn’t about tonight; it’s about a season of us not being good enough as a football club from top to bottom. Every player, including myself, have not been good enough. It has to be better.

“It’s a difficult time for the club. We’ve got to learn from it, move on and make sure we get back quicker than we did last time and make sure when we do we’re better and stronger.”
