Gibson calls on Boro players to give fans one last cheer
Their relegation from the Premier League may have already been sealed, but Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson is hoping his side can leave the top flight with their heads held high.
Boro head to Anfield to face a Liverpool side looking to secure their Champions League spot on Sunday, but Gibson has assured fans that they simply won’t be there to make up the numbers.
Indeed the Teesside club have once again sold out their away allocation despite their fate, returning to the Championship just one year after promotion.
And the 24-year-old insists it’s those supporters that must be the driving force for a strong performance in their season denouement, hopeful his team can end the campaign on a positive note.
“We’ve played in games in the past when teams have had nothing to play for and they’ve worked their hardest,” said Gibson. “So we’ll be looking to go down there and have an effect on the league table.”
“We’ve got to give our amazing fans something to cheer about. They’ve got to look forward to next season and we have to do that with a good performance.”
Boro are guaranteed to finish in 19th in the Premier League table, with just five wins to their name in a season that saw Aitor Karanka lose his job as manager.
