Antonio backed for England call-up

As Mark Noble waits anxiously to hear if his dream of being named in an England squad finally comes true on Sunday, West Ham United co-chairman David Gold believes his team-mate Michail Antonio should also get his chance on the international stage.

Since his £7million switch from Nottingham Forest 12 months ago, Antonio has regularly switched between playing in defence and midfield.

Alongside his versatility, Antonio has shown an eye for a goal and great physicality, yet is still mastering the finer points of playing as a modern day full-back.

But Gold feels the 26-year-old is ready to represent his nation when Sam Allardyce takes charge of the Three Lions for the first time against Slovakia next month.

“He loves the big occasion and is a big player,” Gold said of Antonio, who scored in West Ham’s final game at Upton Park and first Premier League game at the London Stadium.

“We talk all the time about Andy Carroll and our wonderful captain Mark Noble over their chances of getting in the England team.

“I am a great supporter of that, but I also feel Michail should be given consideration because he is a special player and worthy of an England opportunity.”
