Shaqiri: Stoke can ‘do a Leicester’ and win the Premier League
Playmaker Xherdan Shaqiri believes Stoke City have the capability to “do a Leicester” and win the Premier League and compete in the Champions League.
But the Switzerland international says the Stoke board must invest in the squad in order for them to compete at the top of the Premier League.
Stoke finished 13th this season but Shaqiri, formerly of Bayern Munich and Inter Milan, is eager to help the club find a similar winning mentality to that of his old sides.
Mark Hughes has already brought in Darren Fletcher from West Brom to strengthen the squad but Shaqiri has called on the side to make significant further investment.
Shaqiri said: “I’m trying to get the club to the top as leader. But I also want to play for titles again and be in the Champions League.
“We were up and down as a team this season. Now we want to attack again in the summer. The board must strengthen – other clubs will also be doing it.
“Can Stoke do a Leicester? Yes, I think this is possible.”
For Stoke to have a similar season to Leicester Shaqiri will need to step up his own personal game. The Swiss star scored just four Premier League goals this season and provided only two assists.
