Ward taking Clarets confidence into Ireland duty
Stephen Ward may currently be focused on international duties with Ireland but he claims that Burnley’s impressive Premier League campaign has left him more confident than ever before.
Ward missed just one game as Burnley retained their top-flight status for the first time in Premier League history, finishing six points clear of relegation in 16th.
Now the left-back’s attention is on World Cup 2018 qualification – with Ireland joint-top of group D ahead of a tie against Austria on Sunday.
And Ward is feeling good about accomplishing a huge achievement by earning the Men in Green a spot at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, thanks largely to the spectacular campaign enjoyed by the Clarets.
“It was brilliant and I’ve taken a lot of confidence from it,” said Ward. “The year we went up, the year before, I felt I had a really solid season.
“Obviously it helps when the team is doing well, but being in the Premier League again next year is great. It’s given me great confidence.
“I’ve had good seasons before in the Championship but at that level, it’s great. The manager was a defender himself and has given me a few little tips – you’re always learning.
“With Ireland, the more lads we have playing at that level will be brilliant.
“We’re all pulling in the same direction. It’s a great group now, there’s a good mix of youth and experience.
“It would be the biggest achievement of everyone’s career if we can qualify [for the World Cup].”
