Newcastle remain in the hunt for Pepe Reina
Premier League newcomers Newcastle United have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of goalkeeper Pepe Reina, with his agent revealing he has been left in limbo by current club Napoli.
The Magpies are back in the big time after storming to the Championship title last year and manager Rafa Benitez is desperate to build a strong side capable of more than just Premier League survival.
Goalkeeper Reina is reportedly among his targets and the pair know each other well from their time at Liverpool.
The Spanish shot-stopper is currently at Napoli and has one year left on his contract, but the Serie A side are still demanding £5m for his services if he does not pen an extension.
AC Milan have also been heavily linked but his agent has ruled out a move to San Siro, and says that a Premier League return could be on the cards if Napoli continue to stall over a new deal.
“No, there’s nothing. In Italy there’s only Napoli,” Manuel Garcia Quillon said.
“The Premier League? We’re talking about an important player who a lot of teams would like, but his priority is to stay with Napoli.
“Is a renewal impossible? I don’t know, we discussed it but for now we haven’t moved forward.”
