Saints man Cedric looking ahead after first Portugal goal
Southampton star Cedric Soares believes Portugal’s performance bodes well for the remainder of the Confederations Cup, despite being held to a 2-2 draw by Mexico.
Cedric, who emerged from the bench in Kazan, looked to have given Portugal all three points when his deflected 86th-minute shot flew in the net.
But Hector Moreno bagged an injury-time header from a corner to snatch a point for Mexico, with Javier Hernandez having earlier cancelled out Ricardo Quaresma’s opener, which came from a Cristiano Ronaldo assist.
Cedric’s effort was his first international goal and he may have an opportunity to add to his tally when the Iberians face hosts Russia on Wednesday, before completing their Group A schedule with a game against New Zealand in Saint Petersburg on Saturday.
And the Saints defender was left with mixed emotions after an impressive display ultimately only delivered a point against the Central Americans.
“We were the more dangerous team,” said Cedric. “We knew Mexico like to have the ball, that they have quality and that they are a strong team with good players, but we were superior and we created more opportunities.
“We left with a sense of frustration after this game. But this is the first game and the result is not a bad one.”
