Solano wants more consistency from Shelvey at Newcastle
Nolberto Solano has called for greater consistency from midfielder Jonjo Shelvey if he’s to become a key player at Newcastle United.
Solano made over 200 appearances for the Magpies during his playing days in two separate spells at St James’ Park, helping them win the Intertoto Cup in 2006.
Shelvey, who has six England caps, has just completed his first full season with Newcastle United making 47 appearances across all competitions.
He contributed five goals and 12 assists in that time as Newcastle won the Championship title and earn promotion to the Premier League.
It’s an arena the England international knows well having made 141 appearances in the top flight with Liverpool and Swansea City.
Former Peru international Solano was in no doubt about Shelvey’s technical ability on the ball, he feels there’s more to come from the central midfielder.
“Shelvey is easily Newcastle’s best technical player and the club’s best footballer but his career has been strange,” Solano said
“He’s 25 now so I hope he can find the consistency because he really does make Newcastle tick when he wants to.
“I hope his career doesn’t go backwards any more and he can find his best form early in the season and keep it going.”
