Klopp happy to have fight for Liverpool No.1 jersey
Three goalkeepers fighting for one place means there will be lots of competition for places at Liverpool this summer, but manager Jurgen Klopp believes the fight for the jersey can only be beneficial for the club.
Simon Mignolet took the gloves towards the end of last season, and was in impressive form to register four consecutive clean sheets as the Reds secured Champions League football.
But with Loris Karius looking to regain his place and Danny Ward keen to show his Premier League ability, the manager is adamant each will have their chance to fight for their place this pre-season.
Karius struggled at times across the season, not making an appearance in the Premier League since December, while Ward played 46 times for Huddersfield – making himself the Wembey hero as the Terriers secured promotion.
And Klopp feels the options at his disposal offer a selection headache he is welcoming.
“That’s very comfortable for the manager, three really good goalkeepers,” said the boss.
“It is like it is and nothing is decided, they can all show how good they are. I don’t want to bring doubt so that they start doubting.
“They are at a fantastic club and a fantastic football club needs fantastic goalkeepers. We had a really good goalkeeping season.
“Yes, it was a little bit difficult for Loris but I’m sure he had his part in the development of Simon, who played a really good season. And Danny played a fantastic season at Huddersfield with a big success at the end.
“We have three goalkeepers and they can all show what they are able to do, and then we will see who will start.”
