Lloris excited by Lopez competition

New Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Pau Lopez may be a threat to regular number one Hugo Lloris, but the Frenchman insists he will do all he can to help the Spaniard settle in at White Hart Lane.

Lopez joined on loan from La Liga side Espanyol on deadline day, as boss Mauricio Pochettino raided his former club in order to provide competition for Lloris and Michel Vorm.

But Lloris, who is currently injured after damaging his hamstring on the opening day of the season against Everton, is excited to see the 21-year-old arrive at the club after the international break.

The club’s goalkeeper coach, Toni Jimenez, himself a former Espanyol and Spain keeper, will play a big role in helping his compatriot settle into London life, and Lloris is adamant Lopez’s arrival is beneficial for everyone.

“I know a bit about him already – he played in La Liga last season for Espanyol and he’s a young keeper with a lot of quality,” he said.

“We will try to make him comfortable on the pitch and off the pitch.

“It’s important to make him feel quite settled within the squad – it’s a new experience for him outside his country and I think it’s good for Michel, for me and for Toni too.

“He will train with us and he will help us to continue our improvement.

“Playing as a goalkeeper is never easy but mentality is important. We try to work well, try to be involved every day for the team and try to improve our levels.

“These are things that are important for all the players but when you’re a keeper these things are especially important.”
