West Ham new boy Fernandes eyes up first team spot

After a week to remember West Ham new boy Edimilson Fernandes admits he is hoping this is just the start for him as he adjusts to life in the Premier League.

Midfielder Fernandes signed a four-year deal at West Ham on August 25 after moving over from his hometown club, FC Sion in Switzerland.

But no sooner had he arrived and the 20-year-old was off on his travels as he helped Switzerland Under-21s beat Kazakhstan 3-0, scoring his first international goal in just his second appearance.

However, Fernandes didn’t stop there and lined up alongside fellow summer recruit Sofiane Feghouli in a strong Hammers PL2 line-up as they took on Wolves on Friday night.

Fernandes’ fizzing cross led to West Ham’s second goal from Toni Martinez and now the Swiss starlet is setting his sights on breaking into Slaven Bilic’s first-team squad.

“The game went well,” he told the club’s website. “You have to keep working hard and you get the rewards.

“It’s always frustrating when you concede a goal in the last minute like that, but it’s part of the game. You’ve just got to keep working hard.

“I’m happy with making a decisive pass for a goal in my first game.

“It’s been a really good week for me. I’ve played three games and I’ve got some match minutes. I’ve also been really pleased with my performances.

“I’ve come to the club and ultimately I want to get in the first team. That’s what it’s about. I recognise there is work to do, but I’ll keep working hard and hopefully achieve my goal.”
