Pienaar: Sunderland need to start winning

The Premier League season may only be a few weeks old but Sunderland midfielder Steven Pienaar insists the Black Cats need to start putting points on the board or risk being cut adrift.

David Moyes’ side have lost four of their five league games already and sit 19th in the table, ahead only of Stoke City courtesy of a better goal difference.

Sunderland have been in an annual relegation fight since 2013 and early signs suggest that will continue this year unless things change.

Pienaar says new manager Moyes has instilled spirit of togetherness in the squad and hopes that will see them through, but is aware of the desperate need to put points on the board.

“We need to keep fighting and make sure we pick up points as soon as possible,” he said.

“The manager said that as long as you put in the effort there is nothing more you can do, and that if you do that it will happen so we just have to keep going and take our chances.

“We didn’t against Spurs and we were punished so it is fine margins, but we’re in it as a team and we will keep working hard for each other. “
