Puel has Southampton back on track, says Romeu

Spanish midfielder Oriol Romeu has praised the decision making and selections of new Southampton boss Claude Puel after the Saints enjoyed a barnstorming September.

Following a cruel last-gasp loss to Arsenal in August and a difficult start to the Premier League, Southampton have remained unbeaten in six games across three competitions ever since.

The undoubted highlight was Southampton’s 3-0 win against West Ham at the London Stadium, while Puel’s men also picked up a hard-earned point at defending Premier League champions Leicester City last time out.

With a punishing European campaign, adding to the pressures of a crowded domestic programme, Puel has been shuffling his pack in recent weeks.

And Romeu is convinced his manager’s ability to pick the right team for every competition has seen Southampton turn the corner.

He said: “I think that we are doing well. There was five or six changes from the last game which is what we’re going to have to do this year because of more competitions and more games.

“We are proving that we have a big squad with enough quality for those kind of rotations.

“We try to always play the same style at home and away. We need to do the same every time and whoever is playing has the same mentality.

“That’s helping us. Whoever comes in they know what they have to do and nothing changes.

“He said on the first day he wants good work. He works with us a lot tactically and I think that comes out when we’ve got clean sheets in the last six games.

“That’s positive and like I said the players who don’t start know what they have to do if they are in for the next game, which is very important.”
