Fuchs insists Leicester City’s defence is thriving

They may not quite be the same swashbuckling, free-scoring Leicester City that captivated football fans across the globe last term, but Foxes defender Christian Fuchs admits he is proud of his side’s defensive record so far this term.

This time last season, Leicester were fifth in the table with 15 points from eight matches, before an astonishing run of form in October and November saw them climb to the Premier League summit.

This campaign has been a slightly different story however for Claudio Ranieri’s men, who currently have just over half that tally with seven matches down having scored nine goals fewer.

But Fuchs insists they are thriving at the other end of the pitch after last weekend’s goalless draw with Southampton, with City having kept five clean sheets in all competitions.

“Southampton are good and in possession they keep the ball moving well, but we kept defending,” said the 30-year-old. “It’s our fifth clean sheet in 10 games so I’m proud of that.

“We had a chance to get on the scoresheet and we didn’t, but it was a great team effort and we’ll take the point.

“Southampton had the ball more often than us but that’s us. We’re always good for a goal on the counter attack, sitting back waiting for them.

“For the opposing team, every team that comes [to Leicester] knows that they’re not only playing against the team on the pitch. They’re playing against this amazing 12th man.

“They have a feeling and know when we need them. They give us an extra push and this was the case against Southampton.”
