Ozil hat-trick always on the cards for fellow Gunner Mustafi

A hat-trick in the Champions League was a first in professional football for Mesut Ozil, but Arsenal team-mate Shkodran Mustafi believes it was only a matter of time before his fellow German would pick up a deserved treble.

Ozil was the star of the show in the Gunners’ 6-0 win over Ludogorets Razgrad on Wednesday night, a win that maintained an unbeaten start to their Champions League campaign, atop Group A by virtue of goal difference ahead of Paris Saint-Germain.

Stunning strikes from Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott were followed by a third from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – prior to Ozil himself getting in on the act.

All three of his strikes came in a rampant second half for Arsene Wenger’s side, with Mustafi delighted that his compatriot’s talent in front of goal was rewarded on Europe’s big stage.

“I think we all know that he has qualities,” Mustafi said. “As soon as he has the ball in the last third, he can make things happen and I think all the boys that played up front have been terrific for us.

“It was about taking the chances – we did that. I’m happy for him, it’s going to give him a lot of confidence for the next game and I’m sure that we are going to need that.

“He has the qualities. He sees his team-mates, he sees all the runs, he has quality on the ball. His passing, his left foot, he has all that you need on the pitch.

“And then scoring three goals in a game just shows how good he is.”
