Lampard: Chelsea are now genuine Premier League title contenders again
While the eyes of the world have been on America and the Presidential race this week, Frank Lampard admits he has been looking longingly back across the Atlantic at former side Chelsea.
The 38-year-old was a Premier League superstar for 19 years, plying his trade with the Blues for over a decade and scoring 177 goals – the most ever by a midfielder in the competition.
After a brief stint with Manchester City, Lampard has just completed his first season in America’s Major League Soccer with New York City, but admits he cannot keep his eyes off what is already proving to be an enthralling Premier League campaign.
And after tipping Pep Guardiola’s side for the title just a few weeks ago, Lampard believes Antonio Conte’s change of tactics has given Chelsea a new panache which has transformed them into genuine contenders.
“Of course, I really care about it. I want Chelsea to win the league, I’m a Chelsea man,” he said.
“I did an interview with Gary Lineker about a month ago and I said Man City would win it, but since then the dynamics have changed.
“It’s a very close call, so I’m going to throw Chelsea and Arsenal in with Man City.
“Chelsea’s change of formation and the way we’ve been playing in recent games; if we carry on like that then we’re going to be contenders for sure.
“And I think it might be the year for Arsenal to have a go too.”
