Everton’s Mirallas only has eyes for Spurs

Everton may have lost to Espanyol at Goodison Park, but Belgian international Kevin Mirallas claims beating Tottenham in their Premier League opener is all that matters for Ronald Koeman’s side.

According to Mirallas, preparation for Spurs’ arrival is their only focus, with the Toffees keen to begin the Farhad Moshiri era with a bang.

Former Olympiacos winger Mirallas thinks Everton can challenge for silverware this season, with victory over Mauricio Pochettino’s side being the first step along that road.

“There are opportunities to win trophies this season and I know how important that is for the fans and this club,” the 28-year-old said.

“Tottenham is a great game to start because I think they were one of the best teams in the Premier League last season.

“I hope we can have lots of success this season and, with a full stadium behind us, we can win the first game against Spurs.
“I’ve worked hard in pre-season and I feel physically stronger. I’m very happy playing under the new manager, I’ve enjoyed the freedom he’s given me on the pitch.”

Ross Barkley missed a penalty on the stroke of half-time which would have cancelled out the spot-kick gifted to Espanyol within five minutes by Koeman’s new signing Idrissa Gana Gueye.

Mirallas though dismissed any criticism of 22-year-old England forward Barkley, saying it was more important that he puts his chances way against Spurs.

“Ross struck his penalty very well but the goalkeeper made a very, very good save,” Mirallas added.

“Sometimes you score and sometimes you don’t – but I’d prefer Ross to have not scored and score next week.

“We had a lot of possession and two or three chances in the second half. It was important that the team worked hard and, although it wasn’t our best football, everyone is working towards getting ready for next week.”
