Anichebe: Things are looking brighter for Sunderland

Victor Anichebe believes the tide is firmly starting to turn for Sunderland after they moved off the bottom of the Premier League table.

Anichebe made the decision to link up with former boss David Moyes at the Stadium of Light, signing to Sunderland in September after being released by West Brom.

But success has been slow in coming, with Sunderland finding themselves at the wrong end of the table following a difficult start to life under Moyes.

However, the recent defeat to Liverpool aside, the last few weeks have hinted at more promising times to come with victories over Bournemouth, Sunderland and then champions Leicester City this weekend.

The latter two came at home and former Everton forward Anichebe, who impressed against the Foxes on Saturday, knows the fans have a big role to play in keeping the players heading in the right direction.

“I said since we came here that we need to make the Stadium of Light a fortress and that’s what it’s becoming,” he said.

“It’s becoming a really tough place for teams to come so we need to carry that on and I’m sure we’ll be fine.

“The gaffer always relies on the fans to get behind us, it was the same at Everton. It allows us to push on. We can’t go around chasing the opposition all the time, but I think we’re a lot smarter now about when we’re going to press.

“We need to get out of this situation that we’re in. But it’s looking brighter so hopefully we can carry it on as the weeks progress.

“We’ve got more and more players coming back, there’s more competition for places.

“The Premier League is incredibly tough, I think it’s the most games I’ve played in a row.

“The fans have taken to me so well, it’s always easy when you’ve got a lot of people behind you. I feel like I’m playing good football so long may it continue.”
