Calvert-Lewin: Everton debut came quicker than expected

Dominic Calvert-Lewin admits even he did not expect to make his Everton debut this side of Christmas after appearing in the Toffees’ dramatic win over Arsenal on Tuesday night.

Calvert-Lewin, signed from Sheffield United, had yet to take to the field in a blue shirt before being thrown into the fray against the Gunners with 11 minutes to go.

The 20-year-old may not have scored the winner – Ashley Williams saw to that – but harried Arsenal to the last as Everton broke a five-game winless streak in the Premier League.

And Calvert-Lewin said: “I’ve made my debut a little quicker than I thought I would, so I made the right decision coming to Everton.

“It is something I have been dreaming of since I was a kid. To come on in the circumstances and get the result in the end just made it all the more special.

“I have had a great reception from the fans twice now with the times I have been on the bench.

“Duncan (Ferguson) gave me the shout to warm up and you get the butterflies. I was stood there on the touchline for a few minutes because the ball took an age to go out of play! That didn’t help too much, but when I finally got on in was great.”
