Man United’s Mkhitaryan toasts best goal of career so far
Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s spectacular goal against Sunderland left Old Trafford stunned, and the Armenian playmaker admits the effort was right out of his top drawer.
With the Red Devils already two goals to the good against basement side Sunderland, Mkhitaryan improvised a one-in-a-hundred backheeled finish that found its way into the bottom corner of Jordan Pickford’s net.
The 27-year-old’s introduction as a 61st-minute substitute marked a return to action after two games out through injury, with Mkhitaryan’s time in Jose Mourinho’s ranks blighted by injuries since his summer move from Borussia Dortmund.
There were appeals for offside from the Black Cats’ defenders, but that aside Mkhitaryan admitted the strike was the pick of his career so far.
“That was the best goal I’ve ever scored,” he said, after United recorded their fourth Premier League victory in a row.
“I was very excited. The first thing I did was look at the assistant and I saw it was not ruled as offside so I just started to celebrate.
“I was expecting the ball to be in front of me and then I realised I was in front of it. As the ball was behind me, the only thing I could do was a backheel so I did that and I succeeded.
“I don’t have anything of concern from a past injury so I’m happy to be back and I’m happy to be back to help the team.
“I will try to do my best for the next game. It’s very important that we’re in good shape and to keep going like this.”
