Hughes backs City’s Mooy to be ‘top Premier League player’

Aaron Mooy is not a name familiar to most Premier League fans, but Huddersfield Town coach Andy Hughes has backed the Manchester City loanee to make a name for himself when he returns to his parent club.

The 25-year-old Australian arrived from City’s sister club Melbourne City in the summer, but was sent out on loan to Hughes’ Huddersfield in the Championship.

And the versatile midfielder has adapted rapidly to life in England and is one of the Championship’s standout players this season, with Huddersfield surprising many to push into the top four and promotion contention.

Pep Guardiola has been keeping tabs on the midfielder and Hughes believes that if he can continue his stellar form then a career as a ‘top Premier League player’ awaits, with City desperate to keep hold of the midfielder after his loan finishes at the end of the season.

“I think if he wants, he could be a top Premier League player,” Hughes said .

“I don’t think he’d have any problem fitting into a top club.

“For me, he can play at the top level. I’ve been lucky enough to work with players that have played in the Premier League and he’s got more than them — I really believe that.

“They’re hard to find, them ones, they’re hard to find and you know we’re quite lucky.

“Australian sportsmen have always been winners as well. He’s got that mentality, he’s got that little nastiness in him which I feel you need to be a top player.”
