Age no concern for McAuley and Olsson

Jonas Olsson admits he is in awe of Gareth McAuley’s longevity as they embark upon their sixth season together at the heart of West Bromwich Albion’s defence.

The Irishman, who turns 37 in December, arrived at the Hawthorns on a free transfer in 2011 and has been teamed up with Olsson ever since, outlasting six managers in the process.

Their start to the Premier League season was typically solid, securing a clean sheet in the opening day clash with Crystal Palace.

Olsson said: “We’ve played a lot of games together. We know each other well. I enjoy playing next to him.

“Gareth is coming on 37 but he’s at his best, I think.

“I’ve played with him for five years and, in my opinion, he’s a better player now than he was five years ago – and he was really good then.

“He’s really athletic for 36 and has more experience, his decision-making is really good. He doesn’t come across as 36 years-old.

“For me, as long as I feel fit and I have the motivation to play, then I’m going to keep playing. When you see Gareth doing so well, maybe it is inspiring.

“We have a good understanding. When you’ve known each other for such a long time, in any relationship, you don’t need to shout at each other, you don’t need to explain what you mean, you know each other that well.

“So, more or less, you don’t need to communicate. You know who is going to be where.”
