Whelan wants Manchester City scalp for Stoke
Midfielder Glenn Whelan is hoping for a much different outcome from the reverse fixture when Stoke City travel to Manchester City on Wednesday night.
Republic of Ireland international Whelan began his professional career at City, although he only made one appearance for them before moving to Sheffield Wednesday in 2004.
His old side saw off Stoke 4-1 when they visited the bet365 Stadium back in August with Sergio Aguero and Nolito both scoring twice.
“It’s always nice to go back but better if we can go and get a result on Wednesday,” Whelan said.
“The game didn’t merit the 4-1 scoreline – they scored two late goals in the 89th and 90th minute when we were right in the game.
“(It) was a bit of a hammering so we’ll go there and put in a performance and hopefully get the right result then we can forget about the home result.”

Last Saturday’s 2-0 win over Middlesbrough moved Stoke up to ninth in the Premier League table – exactly where they have finished in each of the last three seasons.
But Whelan is setting his sights a little higher this year.
“I know West Bromwich Albion are a few points ahead of us at the moment but we are chasing them,” he added.
“There are 11 games to go and a lot of points to play for. We want to try and beat last year’s total and get higher up the league.”
