Conte wants more goals from top-of-the-table Chelsea

Chelsea’s front line may have put on a counter-attacking masterclass at the London Stadium on Monday evening, but boss Antonio Conte is demanding his side start to score more goals in their Premier League run in.

The 2-1 victory over West Ham extended the Blues’ lead at the top of the league table to ten points, with Eden Hazard and Diego Costa on target once again.

Hazard’s goal in particular was the fruit of a high-quality move, with N’Golo Kante intercepting a loose pass before Pedro and the Belgium international took over, with the latter eventually taking the ball around West Ham goalkeeper Darren Randolph and finishing with aplomb.

But Italian boss Conte wants his side to improve their ruthless streak, having been made to sweat in the closing moments after Manuel Lanzini’s half-volley late on.

“Eden is really important for us; we all know that,” he said. “He’s a really good player with great technique and talent.

“It’s better when he plays between the lines to score on the counter-attack. It’s not his speciality but he’s very good at receiving the ball, going one-on-one and beating his opponent to score the goal.

“We also have other options of scoring a goal on the counter-attack, people like Willian and Pedro and Costa, and this is also good.

“Our first goal was a really good goal. But we created more chances and we must be more clinical to finish the game.

“When you stay at 1-0 or 2-0 in England, anything can happen. You can see if West Ham scored in the 85th minute and not the 92nd we would be in trouble.

“For this reason, we have to be more clinical, and when we create the chances to score, we must score, score, score.”
