Toffees’ Funes Mori: I understand importance of Merseyside derby

This weekend will see the 228th Merseyside derby contested and despite being an outsider, Everton’s Argentine defender Ramiro Funes Mori claims he knows exactly what the historic fixture means to the city.

Everton haven’t won a Merseyside derby since 2010 but head to Anfield on a run of just one loss in their last 12 league matches which has left them seventh in the Premier League.

The Toffees’ wait for a win on their bitterest rivals’ turf is even longer, with a Kevin Campbell goal ensuring a 1-0 triumph back in September 1999.

But Funes Mori is adamant the team are confident of ending that drought and eager to write their names in Everton folklore.

“It’s been a while since we last won on their pitch but derbies are what marks you in your life and in history,” said the 26-year-old. “We are looking forward to that game.

“Not just only in the city but when I came to Everton, they all talked about the derby against Liverpool. So I know the history. I watched the Premier League as a kid, so I know what it’s all about.

“It’s a really important game for the people of the city. I’m looking forward to it and hopefully we get the chance to win it.

“They [Liverpool] are a good team. Lately they haven’t been getting some results but we don’t think about them, we don’t care about them. I like to think about us and what we can achieve until the end of the season.”
