Davis: Redmond taking to new position like a duck to water

Southampton captain Steven Davis has tipped Nathan Redmond to be a big player for the Saints following his debut goal in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Watford.

The former Norwich City winger, who joined from the Canaries in a £10million deal this summer, scored the equaliser for Claude Puel’s side in their Premier League opener against the Hornets.

Redmond played alongside Shane Long as a striker at St Mary’s on Saturday and Davis has backed the former England Under-21 international to shine in his new position.

Davis said: “I think he’s admitted himself that he’s learning the new position as he’s used to playing a bit wider, but you can see that he’s obviously got good feet and can move the ball in tight areas, which is important.

“He can also go on in behind as well to mix it up for us so I think he’s someone who’s going to be a big player for us this year.

“I’ve been impressed since he came in during pre-season. He works hard for the team and you can also see that he’s got that quality.

“He’s a threat, he can find spaces and he made a couple of good runs today, and I think he’s going to be a big asset for us this season.”
