Frustrated Klopp rues missed opportunities

Manager Jurgen Klopp was left ruing what could have been as Burnley scored twice with just 19 per cent possession to see off Liverpool at Turf Moor.

Sam Vokes and Andre Gray scored with both of Burnley’s shots that were on target while Liverpool had 26 efforts on goal but failed to beat Tom Heaton.

It was a stark contrast to Liverpool’s clinical finishing in their opening game where they put four past Arsenal at the Emirates.

And it left Klopp cutting a frustrated figure in his post-match press conference but he refused to criticise Burnley’s methods.

“[Possession] is what we did well, but in the end you have to use it,” he said.

“We lost in a game in which we had in both halves about 80 percent possession. But there are different ways to play football, that’s absolutely OK.

“Our timing and decision-making today was not really good. It might have been forced by the result and by the passion of the opponent, but it is how it is.

“It was a difficult game for us. We lost the ball in the wrong moments, in open moments, counter-attack and counter-pressing.

“The two strikers of Burnley, Vokes and Gray, did really well, physically strong guys. The rest defended with big heart.

“I respect this but usually in a game like this, we win, if we don’t make mistakes in the wrong moment. But we did. Now we have to accept the result and carry on.”
