Januzaj: I can prove myself under Moyes

Adnan Januzaj believes that being reunited with David Moyes at the Stadium of Light can result in a return to the form that saw him rewarded with Ryan Giggs’ former No.11 shirt back at Manchester United.

The Belgian arrived on loan in the North East on Friday, and made his debut the very next day, coming on as a substitute in the defeat to Manchester City.

And it is a loan move he desperately needs to make work after struggling to receive playing time of any note under Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford last season.

A stint at the Black Cats could just be the tonic he needs however as Moyes, who claims Januzaj’s talent as a teenager was comparable to a young Wayne Rooney, brought the best out of him at United.

As one of the few bright spots of Moyes’ Red Devils reign, Januzaj scored four goals – including a double in a comeback victory over Sunderland – from 35 appearances in 2013/14.

He is not the only player to link back up with Moyes as the Scot has snapped up defenders Paddy McNair and Donald Love from United – and Januzaj says he can help restore his self-belief.

“I look forward to [playing under Moyes]. I came here to play games and I look forward to working with him,” said the 21-year-old.

“I came here to get games and to play for this club because the manager gave me the opportunity to come and prove myself again.

“I always enjoyed playing in his team, with the freedom that he gives me and the confidence. Once you have that confidence you can make things happen so I’m really happy to be here.

“I was already friends with [Donald Love and Paddy McNair], at Man United we played all together. “Obviously it’s good to have them here and I look forward to it.

“My job is to score goals and help the team to win games so that’s what I’m here for.”
