Romeu has found a home in Southampton

Oriol Romeu has done his fair share of travelling but the Spanish midfielder believes he has finally found a home at Southampton.

A product of the Barcelona academy, Romeu was given his first taste of professional football by Pep Guardiola back in 2010 but made just one appearance for the Catalans before moving to Chelsea.

Finding game time at Stamford Bridge was equally difficult, and led to loan spells at Valencia and Stuttgart before moving to St Mary’s at the start of last season.

And while there has been plenty of change on the south coast over the summer, with Claude Puel replacing Ronald Koeman, Romeu believes the atmosphere at the club has not changed and he feels comfortable.

“That’s what I wanted to feel. The family club that we have here helps everyone to settle and to get better. To feel like part of a club, rather than going on loan, is much better,” he said.

“I’m very happy here. Once you’ve had a long season with all your teammates and everyone in the club you’re feeling much more comfortable.

“Since the first day, everyone was amazing with me. I’m very pleased with the way they treated me, but now it’s even better. The confidence is higher. You can see how day by day you can get in and settle in easily, so it’s very good and I’m very proud to be here.

“I just want to try to get better and improve every day. Last season we had a very good season and we all enjoyed it, but this one is another challenge.

“We just have to get better and improve. We changed our system and we changed a little bit our style of play. We have a good team and we just have to improve and get better. Personally, I feel very comfortable with my teammates, the confidence is higher.”
