Bilic excited for Payet return after ‘crazy’ transfer window

West Ham boss Slaven Bilic has labelled this year’s transfer window splurge as ‘crazy’ – and is thrilled that his star man Dimitri Payet was not part of the circus.

The Premier League spent a staggering £1.1bn in total this summer, with Paul Pogba’s record-breaking £89m transfer to Manchester United the headline act.

Rumours swirled that his France teammate Payet would also be on the move after proving Les Bleus’ most effective player at Euro 2016, with Arsenal the probable destination.

However, Bilic managed to hold onto the man that scored 12 goals and assisted many more for West Ham last season.

And though the 29-year-old’s start to the 2016/17 campaign has been dogged by injury, Bilic is confident that Payet will be just as electric once he returns to full speed.

“It is key for us if he can produce his best form again. He has the qualities that the best players have and can help change a game,” he said. “They are influencing their team-mates and opponents.

“He makes the team play better and everyone around him is benefitting. The team recognised that last season.

“(The transfer window) is a bit too crazy especially if you watch television and you go like how many minutes to go, how many seconds to go, if we break one billion and all that.

“It’s all crazy but you can’t stop it.”
