Lucas adamant Liverpool could field two teams

Liverpool may have failed to win the title in the Premier League era but midfielder Lucas Leiva believes their current squad is good enough that the club could field two successful sides.

The Reds made a slew of new signings over the summer as Jurgen Klopp sought to put his own stamp on the squad – with the likes of Sadio Mane, Joel Matip and Georginio Wijnaldum heading to Anfield.

Lucas, who is back to full fitness following a hamstring injury, is now Liverpool’s longest serving player after joining the club from Gremio in 2007 and is convinced the current crop of players are ready to pull up trees this term.

“I think it’s clear that we have very good players in every single position – and not just one good player, I would say we have two teams you could put out to get you results,” he said.

“Of course the Premier League is very difficult, but I think the squad we have, with the new players who have made us stronger – hopefully it’s going to be a very good season for the club.”

With Anfield’s main stand being redeveloped, the Reds have played their opening three league clashes away from home, and mixed results have followed.

Victory over Arsenal and a draw with Tottenham Hotspur can be seen as positives but a disappointing loss at Burnley – despite having over 80 per cent of possession – was sandwiched in between.

And Lucas is under no illusions that improvements can be made.

“Of course it could be better,” stated the Brazilian international. “Especially the Spurs game – we had a chance to win the game.

“The Burnley game was a strange one because we had a lot of the ball.

“I think it’s an OK beginning. We’ve played three games away from home in a row, and against two teams who will challenge for the top four and the title, so it’s not bad.

“But we need to get points and win games in a row as soon as possible because we want to be higher in the table.”
