Lukaku gave me reality check says Everton’s Stekelenburg

Martin Stekelenburg defied the odds by saving penalties from Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne in the same game, but he has admitted Romelu Lukaku brought him back to earth swiftly in training.

Though few stoppers can say they have saved a penalty from both Aguero or De Bruyne, 34-year-old Stekelenburg managed to deny Pep Guardiola’s two biggest stars in the same game.

Lukaku grabbed the Toffees’ only goal that day and he was on hand when training began to ensure Stekelenburg didn’t get too carried away.

“Rom took some penalties against me,” he said. “It didn’t go very well with him.

“I’ve not forgotten about it, I just focus on the following game

“Was it the game of my life? Not at the moment.

“I sit here now with a lot of people talking about it – and if you stop two penalties in a game and you get a result it is always different.

“If you lost four or five nil I don’t think I will be sitting here with so many people.

“When it wins you a point it is nice, especially there, because I don’t think many going there will take points.”
