Vokes adapting to lone Burnley role
Burnley striker Sam Vokes admits it’s taken some time to adapt to life without strike partner Andre Gray, but insists he is more than capable of having an impact on his own up front.
The four-match suspension of Gray has prompted a tactical reshuffle from Burnley boss Sean Dyche, with Vokes taking up the role of a sole striker at Turf Moor in the Clarets’ first season back in the top flight.
And while it’s a duty the 26-year-old has had some familiarity with at international level, the Welshman admits it has come with its own challenges with Gray’s potential return to come following next week’s game with Everton.

“It takes a little bit of adapting to. At Wales it’s a tactic we use a lot so I’ve had some familiarity, but here at club level I’ve been used to working with a partner,” said Vokes.
“I enjoy both roles, whether there is one or two up front it’s important to put in a good performance and do a job.
“Your game does have to adapt slightly. When you’re on your own it’s more of a battle up against two, maybe three defenders. It’s important that you keep your concentration and stay in the game, because when it comes up to you there’s a job to do.
“The lads have been great with their support in midfield, and having three of them in the midfield is good.”
