Pickford: Sunderland camp still upbeat

They are still waiting for a first Premier League win of the season, but Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford insists the mood is still positive on Wearside.

The Black Cats have made the joint-worst start in Premier League history with just two points from their first ten games and they are still looking for a first win of the season.

Already sitting eight points adrift from 17th-placed West Ham in relegation danger, David Moyes’ side are also waiting for a first clean sheet of the campaign, although Pickford has impressed between the sticks so far.

And the 22-year-old, whose side face Bournemouth at the weekend, believes an upturn in fortunes is just around the corner, despite a heavy 4-1 defeat at Arsenal last Saturday.

“The mood within the camp is good but nobody likes losing games, so it’s up to us to get a result which would lift the fans and get a real buzz around the city ahead of the game against Hull City (the first game after the international break),” he said.

“Defeat was tough to take against Arsenal but we performed well during parts of the game and anything you take from a top six club is a bonus.

“We have to do our jobs against the teams around us and we’re fully capable of beating them, so the challenge is to take something from the game this weekend and build on it after the break.

“We have a good bunch of lads and everybody is pulling in the same direction.”
