Watford thrilled by Deeney loyalty

Troy Deeney’s decision to stay at Watford will be huge for the club according to Adlene Guedioura, after the striker kicked off his season in style.

Deeney scored 15 goals last season as the Hornets finished in 13th position in the league, and got his tally for the new season up and running with a header against Southampton on Saturday.

The subject of reported interest from Leicester City, Watford announced a new five-year contract for Deeney at the start of July.

A move to the champions would have been understandably attractive to the 28-year-old, especially with the prospect of Champions League football.

By remaining at Watford, however, he remains the star man, a status he would not have been afforded at the King Power Stadium alongside the likes of Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez.

“It was a really good thing [he stayed],” Guedioura said.

“He is a historic player for Watford and he is a big character. We want that at the club. The club is growing and growing. We are happy he is here and he can grow with the club.

“It is good for the fans that Troy stays at the club. We didn’t talk about that [whether he would stay or go], we talk about the match.

“But he is here, he hasn’t said he is going and I don’t think there is any more happening. We feel he is here and we are happy he is.”
