West Ham United must cut out the mistakes if they’re to get a result against Southampton this weekend according to manager Slaven Bilic.

The Hammers lost 4-0 to Manchester City on Wednesday night at the London Stadium, a near repeat of their 5-0 loss against the same opposition in the FA Cup just a few weeks earlier.

After their Third Round exit, Bilic’s men reacted with a 3-0 success in the Premier League at home to Crystal Palace before beating Middlesbrough 3-1.

And Bilic wants a similar reaction to Wednesday’s defeat to Pep Guardiola’s team this coming weekend.

He said: “It’s a heavy defeat for us and it’s hurting us a lot but we can’t let it affect us a lot and we need to bounce back like we did after the defeat in the FA Cup.

“We need to show how we can bounce back against Southampton.

“They beat us 5-0 in the cup and then 4-0 tonight and make no mistake, we have to give them credit but it was also about us.

“We gave those kind of players too much space and time on the ball and space between the lines. When you give them space like that they just slaughter you.

“It was very frustrating and it’s like what happened in the cup.

“We again started well but when you make mistakes like we did for some of their goals and if you give the ball away in those areas then they punish you.”

There were a few eyebrows raised when the relatively-unknown Mohamed Elneny signed at the Emirates 12 months ago, but Arsene Wenger believes his midfielder has spent the time showing himself to be a perfect advert for his country.

The Egyptian hasn’t featured since New Year’s Day for the Gunners, instead leading his side to the African Cup of Nations final despite missing the semi-final, penalty shootout victory over Burkina Faso with injury.

But since his £5m arrival from Basel, Elneny has also had plenty of influence on Wenger’s plans, playing 19 times this term – his first full season in English football.

But while he has just one goal to his name – in last season’s Champions League defeat to Barcelona – Wenger believes the 24-year-old’s physical attributes and attitude have certainly been worth shouting about.

“I’m very delighted with Elneny,” he said. “First of all, he is a guy who contributes a lot to the collective quality of the team.

“He defends well, he attacks well and he’s a continuity player who puts oil in the engine. He’s a pleasure to work with on a daily basis.

“He’s a big advert for Egypt because he’s humble, he’s willing to do well, he has a helpful attitude. He’s a fantastic boy and a great asset for us.”

Serbian midfielder Luka Milivojevic is raring to get going for Crystal Palace after signing on transfer deadline day.

The 25-year-old joined Sam Allardyce’s men in an £11 million deal from Greek side Olympiacos.

Palace won for the first time in two months on Tuesday night, beating Bournemouth 2-0 at the Vitality Stadium for Allardyce’s first win as manager since taking the reins from Alan Pardew.

And new signing Milivojevic, who has won 19 caps for his country, has vowed to show the Crystal Palace faithful and the Premier League what he is all about as the south Londoners battle the drop.

“I’m very excited to come to Crystal Palace and very excited to play in the Premier League, which is one of the best leagues in the world,” he said.

“I will try to do my best, to give my best for the team and to adapt to the league and my new team as fast as possible.

“I’m a defensive midfielder, I’m the one who tries to control the game and bring balance to the team,” he said. “I will try to do my best and bring my qualities as soon as possible.

“This year I’ve scored six goals in 17 games – which is a little bit strange for me! I’ve been a success this year [at Olympiacos].

“In the league I’ve played nearly every game, I’ve only missed one and that was [due to suspension] because of the cards.”

Odion Ighalo insists Watford will always be in his heart, after leaving for the Chinese Super League.

Ighalo joined Chinese outfit Changchun Yatai for £20million on transfer deadline day after struggling for form with the Hornets this term.

Despite this season not going to plan for the Nigerian striker, he did notch 39 goals in 100 appearances during his time at Vicarage Road.

And while his tenure may not have ended how he would’ve liked, Ighalo had nothing but praise for the club’s fans.

“A special thanks to Watford fans, who I really hold dearly in my heart because they supported me since the very first day I came to this club to the last day,” said Ighalo.

“Even when things weren’t going well for me, they were still there chanting my name beside me. Though things don’t always go the way you want in life you have to keep moving and working hard.

“Some of them were not happy because the goals did not come as they want. I understand them because I’ve done it in the past and they want to see it again.

“I’m sorry for that and I’m sorry it didn’t work out the way it should be but I’m really happy to have been associated with this Watford family and wherever I go, to China or whatever, I’m still going to hold the fans dearly to my heart because they have always been there for me.”

Middlesbrough are the Premier League’s lowest scorers and midfielder Marten de Roon claims the team are making a conscious effort to work on their attacking prowess.

Boro have scored just 19 league goals this term with bottom two clubs Sunderland and Hull City the next-lowest, having notched 20 apiece.

De Roon and co did notch on Tuesday evening, as Alvaro Negredo slotted home a 17^th-minute penalty to cancel out James Morrison’s sixth-minute opener in a 1-1 draw with West Brom.

The Teessiders looked more of a threat going forward at the Riverside Stadium than they have done in recent weeks – having notched just two goals in their previous five Premier League games.

And the Dutchman claims that improvement was not an accident.

“In training, we’re looking to play a little bit more forward and create more chances. With goals, you win,” said de Roon.

“You can play every match 0-0 but that doesn’t help us at the moment.

“The coaches have been training us a little bit more in attacking shapes and I thought we did really well after the first ten minutes against West Brom.

“We have to go forward with positives from the game and hopefully we can get some more results.”

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino believes there needs to be more aggression from his team if they are to make a late charge for the Premier League title.

Spurs missed a glorious opportunity to close the gap on leaders Chelsea on Tuesdya night as they recorded a goalless draw at struggling Sunderland.

Chelsea were held 1-1 at Liverpool, while North London rivals Arsenal surprisingly lost 2-1 at home to Watford but Pochettino’s troops were unable to take full advantage.

They remain nine points behind the Blues despite dominating possession against the Black Cats, seeing 73 percent of the ball, but failing to make the breakthrough.

“I’m a little disappointed with the performance in the first half,” said Pochettino of the defeat.

“I thought we were poor and didn’t take our opportunity, only one shot on target (in the first half) is too poor to win the game.

“In the second half we played better and created chances but it wasn’t enough to win the game.

“We feel bad and disappointed because it was a great chance to reduce the gap to Chelsea at the top.

“We showed a lack of aggression in the first half and that was the problem. We can’t afford to play in that way when we’re playing for big things.

“We need to learn about that and try to fix it and Saturday (home against Middlesbrough) is another opportunity for us to win three points.”

Swansea captain Jack Cork is confident his side are headed in the right direction after recording their third win in four Premier League games against Southampton on Tuesday.

Gylfi Sigurdsson’s 70^th-minute strike was the difference as the Swans ran out 2-1 winners at the Liberty Stadium, and saw Paul Clement’s team continue their rise out of the relegation zone.

Victory marked the end of a successful January for the Swans, in which they defeated Crystal Palace, Liverpool and the Saints, falling only once at the hands of Arsenal.

And Cork insists their improvements are there for all to see, and is confident the only way is up for his team.

“It has been a good four games for us now,” he said. “Three wins out of four looks like we are going in the right direction.

“Recent results have given us a lot of confidence. The first part of the season has been tough, but it feels like we are more organised and doing things the right way.

“We feel a lot more organised and we are confident we can keep our shape.

“It was a good performance on Tuesday night – we kept the right shape and we deserved the win.

“Against Palace, Liverpool and Southampton, we  conceded, but we did not let that affect the result overall.

“That is the real difference and it shows we are not giving up and will fight towards the end of the season.”

Next up for Swansea is a trip to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City – a ground they are yet to take a point away from.

But Cork feels their recent good form will give them their best chance of breaking that duck.

“Manchester City might be a bit similar to the Liverpool game, we go there trying to get a result,” he said.

“We are full of confidence and if we play like we have in the last few games then I am sure we can get a result.”

Sean Dyche has brought in further Premier League experience to Burnley with the signing of Robbie Brady and the midfielder is desperate to repay his new manager’s faith in him.

Brady is a club record transfer from Norwich, with the fee potentially rising to £13m, after a month-long pursuit by the Clarets.

And the 25-year-old Republic of Ireland midfielder believes he’s joined a club on the up after previous forays into the Premier League with the Canaries and Hull City.

He said: “It’s a great move for me. It’s where everybody wants to be and for me to get the opportunity, and the manager to give me the opportunity, to come and play in it again is fantastic.

“I will grab it with both hands and hopefully I can do my bit to help the lads. It’s been a fantastic start to the season and it looks like a club going in the right direction.

“I’m just buzzing that the manager has showed enough faith in me to want to bring me here and hopefully I can repay him.

“I’m ready to work hard and learn how things work here and hopefully I can fit in and do my bit.”

Southampton boss Claude Puel hailed the club’s deadline day transfer business after landing last-gasp deals for Manolo Gabbiadini and Mouez Hassen.

Hassen arrived on loan from OGC Nice until the end of the season and will add much needed competition in the goalkeeping department; particularly with Alex McCarthy sidelined presently.

While Italian international forward Gabbiadini arrived from Napoli for £15million on a four-and-a-half-year deal, with Puel desperate to bolster the striking options at his disposal.

Gabbiadini, who began his career at Atalanta and has six caps for Italy, had found his opportunities limited at the Stadio San Paolo this season.

Puel said: “Manolo is a striker and after the injury of Charlie Austin it was important to give an opportunity for the squad and to try to make progress and to give all the possibilities in the squad.

“He will be important I think but it’s the first time he comes into the Premier League, another country, another squad, and it will be important to stay with patience at the beginning.

“He’s a good player, a good striker and he will bring good intention and good opportunities for the future.

“I think Mouez Hassen is important with the injury to Alex McCarthy. It was important to take another goalkeeper. Hopefully he can show the fans his quality.”

Marc Wilson’s versatility could prove vital for West Brom in the second half of the season – according to boss Tony Pulis.

Pulis moved on deadline day to bring in Wilson – who he worked with at previous club Stoke – from Bournemouth.

Wilson, who can play in midfield as well as across the defence, had found game time scarce with the Cherries this season.

But with the Baggies pushing for a top half finish this season in the Premier League, Pulis is excited about his new addition, who joins Jake Livermore in his list of January captures.

“He can play in a number positions – at full-back, in midfield, in defence, centre-half … he gives us more cover and that is going to be important. I know him well and he knows how I work.

“We tried for quite a few but the prices and the opportunity to get them were just not there for us.  We are fishing from such a small pool and trying to improve the starting XI, which is what we want to do, is not easy.

“It’s a small group but they are tight together and now it’s up to us to keep them fit, keep them away from suspensions and keep them working hard.”
