Tottenham Hotspur starlet Harry Winks believes he can kick on and earn an England call-up after the appointment of Gareth Southgate as national team boss.

Southgate was manager of the England under-21s from 2013 to 2016, before stepping up to take charge of the senior side.

Winks, 21, has flourished at White Hart Lane in recent months and is part of Aidy Boothroyd’s under-21 squad set to take on Denmark in Monday’s friendly.

And the talented midfielder feels the chance is there for him to represent the Three Lions if he should continue his good form.

“The manager (Boothroyd) has told us that there are opportunities there, as long as we keep performing for club and country and doing well, then the opportunity is there to take,” he said.

“With someone like Gareth in charge, he likes young players and he’s keen to bring us through and give us opportunities.

“You could see that the other night (in the senior game against Germany), we had a lot of young players playing and it’s just down to us really, whether we perform at club level to get the call-up.

“My next step is to take it game by game, whether that’s for the under-21s here or for Tottenham back at home.

“I’m quite young and all I can do is perform when I’m given the opportunities, I can’t read the future and I can’t say I should be here or I should be there.”

Jeff Reine-Adelaide is relishing training alongside Santi Cazorla, believing his Arsenal team-mate is the ideal player to model his own game on.

Reine-Adelaide, 19, joined the Gunners from French club RC Lens, making his professional debut for Arsenal in January 2016 as a substitute against Sunderland in the FA Cup.

He has since had to bide his time with only as handful of further appearances – although the French midfielder has been making sure to benefit from his time among the squad.

And he admits Spanish international, and two-time FA Cup winner Cazorla, has been one player who has particularly stood out for him.

“I look up to them all,” said Reine-Adelaide. “If I had to name one, it would have to be Santi Cazorla.

“He has superb natural ability, he can play with either foot, he can do anything. I think he’s a magician!

“When you watch him play, you can sense he is really serene because he knows exactly what he is doing. Whatever the situation, he will win the ball cleanly.

“I try to be like that so I can play like him.”

Sean Dyche feels that Michael Keane’s international debut is a sure sign Burnley are heading in the right direction.

The Clarets defender, 24, made his England bow in Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat to Germany, producing an assured display at the back.

Keane follows stopper Tom Heaton as the second Clarets player to earn an England call-up in less than a year, after a 42-year gap of the Lancashire club not having an England international in the side.

Dyche has guided Burnley to 13^th in the Premier League, eight points clear of the relegation zone, and hailed Keane’ development during his time at Turf Moor after moving from Manchester United in January 2015.

“He came here two years ago,” said Dyche. “People soon forget, there has been a depth to his development. It’s not been overnight.

“Sometimes it’s misrepresented about some of these players. It takes time sometimes for these players to develop into what they are going to be.

“And unfortunately, due to the harsh side of football, managers don’t always get time to see these players develop long term.

“I’ve been fortunate we’ve had success enough to allow me the chance to hopefully rub off on some of these players, including my staff and the work they do with them. Keano’s a good example of that, Tom Heaton is another one.

“It’s not just those two. But they are quite obvious about how they have moved forward with their own careers, how they have moved forward with Burnley, and are now being recognised on the international scene.”

Jurgen Klopp has advised Sheyi Ojo not to hold back if he wants to force his way back into Liverpool’s first-team set up.

Ojo looked set for a big role this season after being involved in Klopp’s side in the closing stages of the 2015/2016 campaign.

But a back injury sustained during the club’s pre-season tour of America put him on the back foot with the 19-year-old winger only making his return from injury for the under-23s in early December.

He has been a regular in the under-23s team ever since although he has not yet made the step back to the senior set-up.

And after taking time to sit down with the England under-19 international during the Reds’ training camp in Tenerife earlier this week, Klopp revealed what he had told his young player he had to do to force himself into the reckoning again.

“The easiest answer was ‘more’, because when you are that skilled, then come on!” said Klopp.

“[I asked] ‘When was the last time you did a 100 per cent sprint?’ Technical-wise he’s so good that he doesn’t use it, but that makes no sense because at the highest level you need this speed.

“Now at U23 level I can see him running like crazy to show ‘yes, I’m ready’ and that helps him a lot. Even in not-perfect games you can see he’s involved in other parts.

“So, it’s a very important moment for him and if he keeps this attitude then everything will be good in the end, 100 per cent.”

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg admits he needs to stand up and show Southampton boss Claude Puel he can be a crucial part of the Saints side, after a frustrating first season in English football.

The highly-rated Danish international joined from German heavyweights Bayern Munich last summer – bringing both hope and expectation that he would become a fine player.

But Hojbjerg has struggled for game time, failing to impress when called upon and often left sitting on the bench.

The international break has given the 21-year-old a chance to regain his confidence and now he heads back to Southampton desperate to prove a point.

“I would lie if I said I felt fantastic but football is sometimes like this,” he said.

“But I also know that we have 22 players in the squad, I also know that the coach [Puel] has to make decisions and me as a player, a part of the team, I have to respect the coach makes the decisions.

“I respect his decisions and know that it is 11 players who can play. I just try to show in training and the small opportunities that I get that I am a man that he can count on.

“I will keep showing him that and try to get better. I always say to myself that in every situation, it doesn’t matter if it’s good or bad, try to get the maximum out of it.”

Watford star Craig Cathcart has revealed his injury hell is finally over after a troublesome groin injury sidelined him for three months.

The centre-back played a key role in the Hornets’ impressive start to the campaign, but was struck down in late September.

He did not play again until New Year’s Day, a woeful 4-1 loss at Tottenham, but since then he has grown back into the role and settled back into the Northern Ireland team on the international stage.

“The start of the season was frustrating for me and I couldn’t really put my finger on what it was,” he said.

“I was getting pain in my groin, and across my lower abs, so it took a while to get a diagnosis.

“It’s a pretty complicated area, everything crosses over in the middle of your body. I went to Italy, Spain, Germany, Holland, Denmark – it was a bit of a tour!

“The medical team at Watford tried to send me to the best places for the best treatment and they just wanted to look after me in the best way.

“The specialists got together in the end and decided surgery was the best option but it did perhaps take a bit long to reach that conclusion.

“It was probably the worst injury I’ve had just because of the fact it was so hard to get a diagnosis and it was a complicated area so you end up with pain in all kinds of areas.”

Abel Hernandez admits relegation from the Premier League was the worst moment of his career, and has vowed for that Hull City disappointment two years ago not to be repeated this time around.

The Uruguayan was part of the Tigers side that finished 18^th in the 2014-15 campaign, just three points adrift of safety – the same season that saw them make their Europa League debut.

But after returning to the top flight at the first time of asking, Hull are once again facing a battle to avoid the drop, again three points away from parity with just nine games left to play.

And, still feeling the pain of two years ago, Hernandez is desperate not to let history follow the same course.

That’s a task upon which he wants to lead from the front for, keen to shake off a topsy-turvy season which has seen himscore just four times in 23 appearances.

“I was here when we were relegated two years ago and it was a horrible feeling. I would say it was the worst time in my career,” he said.

“I put my whole life into football and am a long way away from my home and family, so to be relegated is just about the worst thing that can happen to you in football.

“We don’t want it to happen again this year and I don’t think this team deserves to go down. We have to give everything that is possible to make sure that we stay up this season.

“It hasn’t been the season I had wanted and injuries have had a big part to play in that.

“Now I am feeling good physically and getting back into my best shape. I take each day as it comes and I just want to keep improving to give the best that I can to the manager and the team for the rest of the season.”

Adnan Januzaj insists his Sunderland side must return from the international break with a desire to work hard if they are to survive relegation from the Premier League.

The Black Cats have got just ten games left to safe their season, currently seven points adrift of 17^th-placed Swansea City at the bottom of the table.

A draw against Burnley proved a welcome relief last time out, however, ending a run of three successive league defeats as the season draws to its close.

But despite the clean sheet in the 0-0 stalemate, Januzaj believes there are still problems at the other end of the pitch, reflecting on a sixth time in seven matches they have failed to score.

“It won’t be easy but we have shown signs in the last few games,” said Januzaj, on-loan from Manchester United. “We know we need to keep working hard – we can do it.

“We played well (against Burnley) but we missed so many chances.

“It was that kind of day, you can have that every now and then where you miss but hopefully in the next game everything will go in.

“We got the zero at the back which is good, that is the start but now we need to score goals.

“It hasn’t been an easy year but we have to work as a team and everything will be fine.

“All the players are now looking for the win, nothing else.”

Anthony Martial admits receiving the unwavering support of the Manchester United faithful helps to drive him on to prove himself at the club.

The Frenchman ensured he will always have a special place in the hearts of United fans after he scored an impressive solo goal against fierce rivals Liverpool in front of the Stretford End on his debut in September 2015.

The 21-year-old went on to finish that season as the club’s leading goalscorer under Louis van Gaal but he has since struggled to hit those heights under Jose Mourinho, managing just seven goals this term.

But while reports have linked the former Lyon and Monaco man away from Old Trafford, Martial was quick to downplay those rumours, insisting the backing of the fans makes it easier for him to commit to the club.

“For me, what’s really special here is the supporters. They’ve been really outstanding with me,” he said.

“I think that’s what goes a long way to making me feel at home and at ease, and makes me really keen to stay here at the club.

“In France, even if you’re one of the best players around, they might begin to boo and jeer you if you go a couple of games without scoring. But here it’s just the opposite, they’ll try to cheer you on so you might be able to score, and so then you grow in confidence.

“I think it’s just a different mentality. That’s why I like the fans here so much.

“I do get messages sent to me by lots of fans and I try to reply to them from time to time. I don’t go on social media that often, though I do try to respond now and again.

“And in the street, there are always those who shout things like ‘Keep going!’ and ‘I hope you score!’, nice messages of encouragement. It always does you good to hear them.”

Jonas Olsson has paid tribute to the club West Bromwich Albion has become since he joined the Baggies for £800,000 in 2008.

The 34-year-old had his contract cancelled by West Brom earlier in the week and announced he would be moving back to his homeland to play for Djurgarden IF.

In an open letter to Baggies fans, published on the club’s official website, the talismanic defender admitted to being sad at leaving, but that the time was right to move on, with his contract expiring at the end of the season.

“There really are a lot of emotions involved. I’m going to miss the club – it’s been a great ride. Everyone says it goes by in the blink of an eye and it really is so true,” said the former NEC Nijmegen man.

“I can remember like yesterday my first game, and I’ve been really proud to be part of West Bromwich Albion.

“It feels good to leave with the club doing so well. You want to leave feeling that you have been part of something good, something you will always be proud of.

“The club has come a long way from when I signed and it was still, in those days, a yo-yo club. We were relegated in that first year but came back up straightaway and we’ve grown and developed every year in every way since then.

“There’s a very different mentality there now. I felt from the start it was a warm club, a family club and I feel it has kept those qualities.

“But it is so much more professional in every way now – the facilities, the staff working there in every department – you can feel it is a big club now.”
