Saints’ Davis targets trophy after reaching Wembley final
Southampton will only truly enjoy their first Wembley cup final since 1979 if they lift silverware according to captain Steven Davis after their 1-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield.
The Saints will face Manchester United at Wembley following their 3-2 aggregate win over Hull City, a re-run of the 1976 FA Cup final; the only time that Southampton have lifted the historic trophy.
While Davis’ side have shown they have the ability on the field to go all the way he also praised the impact of those in the stands during the semi-finals for their vocal support.
He said: “It’s something to look forward to for everyone involved but the only way we’ll enjoy the day is if we win some silverware – that’s the ambition.
“They (the fans) were excellent. At times in the game you know you’re going to have to dig in and the encouragement of the fans gives that little bit of inspiration to keep pushing through if you’re getting tired.

“I don’t know if it’s really sunk in yet but it’s a fantastic achievement and we look forward to the final.
“You can go throughout the team and everyone put in a hell of a shift. It was a real team effort and we’ve got something to look forward to now.
Southampton face Arsenal at home in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday.
